Former NFL sensation Mike Williams, aged 36, met an untimely demise on Tuesday morning after being removed from life support at a Tampa, Florida medical facility, following a devastating construction accident, as revealed by his agent Hadley Engelhard in an exclusive statement to CNN.
Williams, who had transitioned to a career in electrical
work, suffered severe injuries during a work-related incident, necessitating
immediate hospitalization, Engelhard disclosed.
"He will be missed. He fought hard his whole life.
Prayers to his family," Engelhard expressed, paying tribute to the late
athlete.
A fourth-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the
2010 NFL Draft, this Buffalo, New York native showcased immense promise from
the outset. He was voted second for the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of
the Year, an honor well-deserved, as he hauled in an impressive 65 passes for
964 yards and an astonishing 11 touchdowns during his debut season, remarkably
starting in all 16 games for the Buccaneers.
In the wake of the tragic news, both the Buccaneers and his
alma mater, Syracuse University, expressed their profound condolences.
The Buccaneers took to social media to convey their sorrow,
stating, "We are saddened to hear of the untimely death of Mike Williams,
which has left our organization, his former teammates, and fans with heavy
hearts. We send our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones as they
mourn this tragedy."
Syracuse's director of athletics, John Wildhack, issued a
heartfelt statement, saying, "We're saddened to learn of the tragic
passing of former Syracuse student-athlete Mike Williams. We extend our deepest
sympathies to Mike's family, friends, and everyone in the Syracuse football
family who knew Mike."
After a successful stint with the Buccaneers spanning four
seasons, Williams was traded to his hometown team, the Buffalo Bills, where he
showcased his talents for one memorable season. Subsequently, in 2016, he
signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, but his tenure was short-lived, as he was
released just four months later.
Throughout his illustrious career, Williams compiled an
impressive stat sheet, amassing 223 receptions for 3,089 yards and an
astounding 26 touchdowns in 63 NFL games. His legacy as a talented wide
receiver will undoubtedly endure, even as the sports world mourns his untimely
passing.
